How to Clean Dog Urine from Carpet with Vinegar?
We just did my entire living room carpet, using the Little Bissell green machine, and all I used was really hot water mixed with white vinegar. It worked fabulously, the carpet looks new germs are killed and the room smells fresh!
For use vinegar to clean the carpet. We steam cleaners our carpets about once a month. It’s an unfortunate necessity, as our cats love to barf up hairballs like it’s their nine-to-five job. Rather than spend a small fortune on store-bought carpet cleaning solutions, most of the time we just substitute with vinegar.
Our steam cleaner has a tank where the cleaning solution is added. We just fill it with full strength vinegar straight from the bottle and then add the recommended amount of hot water. The room smells like vinegar the entire time you are cleaning, but once it dries the smell goes away and your carpets look amazing. You don’t even have to rinse. As always, make sure to test a small patch of your carpet before you clean it with anything.
I first discovered my love for vinegar when it came to cleaning our wall-to-wall white carpet. Vinegar has helped me maintain my sanity while living with white carpet and two hot-mess-cats.
Personally, I use vinegar–white distilled, in my machine. 1/2 cup to 2 gallons of hot water. If my dog does an accident, I take a gal of hot water and 1/4 cup vinegar, swish and dump on spot. Then use the shampooer within 10 minutes to clean it.
I found that I take the 2-gallon container on my shampooer and for rinsing the carpets add 1 ounce of Febreeze or another brand. You can get it in sprayer form or bulk. It makes the whole house smell nice, can’t tell we have a dog! If I only need to freshen up the carpet, vacuum first then run shampooer with water only, do not use carpet cleaner detergent. Use the Febreeze.

Rubbing Alcohol in Carpet Cleaning Machine
I ended up finding this recipe to make my own dry foam Kirby shampoo. With pet smells vinegar is the best option. It’s the opposite of the ammonia in the animal urine so it breaks up the enzymes causing the smell. Add a little more for super tough pet smells. And borax, one cup mixed in will kill fleas if they are a problem. I love this recipe, saved me so much!
12 cups Water
1 Tbs White Vinegar
1/2 tsp Rubbing Alcohol
3 Tbs Dish Soap (Dawn, Palmolive, etc.)
All you have to do is add the dish soap last to avoid creating too many bubbles, mix well and pour directly into the soap tank. There is no need for diluting or adding extra water or anything. This recipe will make about enough to fill up the tank one and a half times. Test a small area to make sure there are no issues with your carpet.
The mix smelled just like the shampoo that I’ve purchased and worked just as well. The stubborn stains all came up and by the time I was done, the carpet was white again. I have no idea why I never thought to try something like this before. I love cleaning with vinegar so it’s like a double win for me.

If you have animals, ammonia is not a good thing to use on your carpets, especially if you are treating a pet stain. The smell will just lure them back to the same spot. Also if you have hardwood floors under the carpet, ammonia will turn the wood black.
Here are a few tips I’ve accumulated to get rid of and clean carpet stains, remember to always test in a small, unnoticeable area first to make sure there won’t be any discoloration or damage.

- Mix 1/4 cup water with 3/4 cup household vinegar. Spray the area generously but not too much that it will soak the under padding. Allow to sit for a minute or two, then dip a white cloth in the water/vinegar mixture and dab area.
- Use a bar of Ivory Soap wrapped with a wet cloth or try a gentle bristle brush. Try a laundry stain remover pen or stick (use on light colored fibers only)
- Pull up gum by covering and slathering the wad with a teaspoon of peanut butter. Allow it to sit for a minute or two, then pull up with a wet cloth.
- Clean the area with a wet, soapy cloth.
- Spot clean with club soda.
- Dab with a soapy sponge, then with hydrogen peroxide or a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide and household ammonia (careful on colored fibers, more for light tones)

With over 10 years of cleaning carpet professionally. Never put soap in your carpet. It is sticky and will always attract dirt. You cannot get it out no matter what you do unless you drag it on the lawn and rinse.
If you clean a spot with soap you will always have that spot which will bleed up and attract dirt. I have a clean mop that I use to mop my carpet with a very mild vinegar water solution. I use a lot of throw rugs which are easier to pick up and wash than to clean the carpet.
