Once your dog has urinated on the carpet, they will keep coming back to that spot, no matter how small the spot.
Now, take your black light and start scanning the carpeted room no more than two feet away from the floor. You will see a brownish-yellow or a fluorescent green color where there is pet urine.
When you have a spot showing what may be pet urine, put a piece of masking tape over it or outline the larger spots.
Now that you know where the urine spots are, you can spot clean them with a little more accuracy than when you clean the whole carpet, being careful not to damage the areas. How Do You Get Dried/ Old Dog Urine Out Of Carpet with Vinegar
Note: Don’t use a steam cleaner when you get pet stains out of carpet because the hot steam will permanently set the stain and pet odor.
For clean old dried dog urine on carpet let’s take 1 cup white vinegar and dilute with water and re-shampoo the carpet with vinegar and water.
With pet stains just pour about 1/4 to 1/2 gallon of the vinegar onto the spot, let it sit for 1-2 days. If there is any fluid residue, soak it up with a clean towel. Then clean your carpet with your regular cleaning solution. When it dries, you will not smell the vinegar at all. It’s too works well with cat urine.
For the stains, old or new, also odor, try this recipe. It really works. Just mix it in a spray bottle & apply. 16 oz. hydrogen peroxide + 1/8 cup baking soda + few drops liquid hand dishwashing soap. Stubborn spots might need more than one application. Always test for colorfastness first.
Or you can buy this stuff called “Nature’s Miracle enzyme cleaner” at most pet stores. Nature’s Miracles has enzymes in it that actually break down the pheromones and get rid of them permanently! It works great! Nature’s Miracle was my top choice for years. I still think it’s one of the best.
